Cottey Comet basketball players have been practicing since October 1. Third-year coach and athletic director Dave Ketterman says the 11 players include five returning starters, led by Nevada native Lacy Leonard, an NJCAA first-team All-American last season. Other Cottey returnees are Kayla Orear, Hume, Ashleigh Houdyshell, Webb City, Kerri Shanks, Crest Ridge High School, Centerview, Mo., Maggie Wigness, Casa Grande, Arizona and Kelsey Bruce, Phoenix, Arizona. Second-year player Elin Lindberg, Angleholm, Sweden, has transferred to the Comets program from Casper, Wyoming Community College. Cottey's freshman players include Sara Sellin, Angleholm, Sweden, Elizabeth Wagoner, Centerview, Mo., Melissa Hedges, Springfield, Mo. and Dominca Sena, Santa Rosa, New Mexico. The Comets start a 20-game regular-season schedule by hosting the St. Mary's University junior-varsity, from Leavenworth, Ks., at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow "in the friendly confines of the Hinkhouse Center". Cottey will host North-Central Missouri, the Mid-America Nazarene junior- varsity, Olathe, Ks. and Brown-Mackie, Salina, Ks. in the Comet Shoot-Out Friday night and Saturday.

Marshall Brown scored 22 points and Missouri forced 41 turnovers in a 94-40 exhibition victory over Lithuania Academy last night at the Mizzou Arena, Columbia. The Tigers start the regular season Friday night when they host North Carolina A & T in the John Thompson Foundation Classic.

Nevada's eighth- and seventh-grade girls basketball teams won three of four games from Joplin Memorial last night at Nevada High School and Nevada Middle School. The eighth graders posted two victories, 49-25, in the A-team game and 33-6 in the B-team game. Nevada's seventh graders won the A-team game, 45-10, but Joplin Memorial won the B-team game, 10-9. The seventh- and eighth-grade "A" teams are to host Stockton this evening, starting at 6:00 p.m.

Nevada Tiger wrestling coach Kevin Huck welcomed 25 wrestlers for the start of pre-season drills a week ago yesterday. He expected some others to report for practices this week after last Thursday night's completion of the football season. 2005-2006 letter-winners returning this season include junior Mason Heard, senior Drew Shepherd, sophomore Colby Shepherd, sophomore Trey Miller, senior Nick Nelson, senior Matt Kennedy, junior Cole Bond, junior Spenser Daniels, junior Jerrod Alexander, junior Ryan Herda, senior Steph Krohn and senior Ethan Fast. The Tigers start the season with a dual at Butler November 28. Missouri Tiger tailback Earl Goldsmith's tenure of starts appears to be over at one game. Head coach Gary Pinkel says Goldsmith suffered a broken hand in last weekend's 34-20 loss at Nebraska and his staff is not sure if Goldsmith will be able to play November 18 when Missouri visits Iowa State. The Tiger football team's to hold light workouts today and tomorrow and will not return to full practices until Saturday. Seven Missouri assistant coaches are on the recruiting trail with only the offensive and defensive coordinators staying home to work on game plans for the Cyclones.

Former Nevada Griffon Mark Teahen was named the 2006 Kansas City Royals player-of-the-year yesterday. He is the fourth different winner in four years and the 21st player to be honored since 1971 when members of the Kansas City chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America began selecting a Royals' player-of-the-year. Teahen batted .290 with a team-leading 18 homers and 69 runs-batted-in in his second season with Kansas City. Most of his production occurred between June 3, when he was recalled from Omaha, and season-ending shoulder surgery September 8. Teahen was a Nevada Griffon during the Summer of 2000.
